Albahari, David; Elias-Bursac, Ellen: Gotz and Meyer Softcover, Harvest Books, Orlando, FL, 2006 0156031108 / 978-0156031103 Very Good+, 0.6 x 7.8 x 5.3 Inches; 180 pages; Slight edge wear. ""What would I have done?" is a fundamental question in Holocaust literature. Translated from the Serbian, this stirring novel draws on a wealth of archival materials, maps, and Nazi bureaucratic records about the concentration camp at the Belgrade Fairgrounds, from where, over five months in 1942, 5,000 Jews were loaded into a truck and gassed. A Serbian Jewish college professor looks back now and obsessively imagines himself as perpetrator, victim, and bystander. Who were the two drivers who connected the exhaust pipe each time so that the fumes killed the passengers? How did it become just a routine job?"

Text clean and unmarked. "1999 saw two major international crises which, looked at side-by-side by Noam Chomsky, starkly illuminate the strategies of the Western powers in the new century. In this volume Chomsky convincingly argues that humanitarianism was not the moving force behind NATO's intervention in Yugoslavia, and that there, as in East Timor, strategic concerns were dominant and the fate of civilian populations incidental."

Fra Mauro, a cartographer, is working on a map of the world based on the oral reports of merchants, travelers and ambassadors who visit him in his cell. Oscillating between a dogmatic medieval mindset and a modern tolerance for, and interest in, diverse cultures and races, Fra Mauro hears stories about the far-flung world in the age of exploration."

Crowley, John: The Translator Softcover, Harper Perennial, New York, NY, 2003 0380815370 / 9780380815371 Very Good, 1.2 x 7.9 x 5.3 Inches; 320 pages; Minor edge wear, small red mark on spine. Text clean and unmarked. "A novel with a time bomb ticking over its head. It takes place during the dark days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, as an American coed develops a complicated relationship with an exiled Russian poet who is her college professor, poetic collaborator, and perhaps lover. Innokenti Falin is a man of many secrets--but then, so is Christa Malone. Growing up, her father spoke only vaguely about his work with the government and computers; her Green Beret brother died under mysterious circumstances in Southeast Asia; and Christa herself has a few things in her past that she'd rather not contemplate. In their power to evoke the physical pleasures of poetry, the scenes in which Falin and Malone work together evoke A.S. Byatt's 'Possession', another gripping novel about language and the life of the mind."

Doerr, Anthony: The Shell Collector : Stories Softcover, Penguin Books, New York, NY, 2003 0142002968 / 9780142002964 Very Good, 0.6 x 7.9 x 5 Inches; 224 pages; Minor edge wear, small spot of sticker residue on back cover and tiny black mark at edge of pages (visible when book is closed). Text clean and unmarked. "The whorls, chambers, and ribs of the seashell are an elegance unto themselves, but if man-made beauty can come anywhere close to this, Anthony Doerr's short stories would be perfect candidates. The title story is about a blind man of 58, a scholar of shells (malacology), who retires to an isolated beach-side hut in Kenya, but then accidentally discovers a cure for a major illness in the often-deadly stings of the cone snail. 'The Hunter's Wife', a second small masterpiece, describes the marriage of a Montana hunter and his much younger, psychically gifted wife. There are more conventional pieces here; well-written, resonating stories that do not attempt the sweep or descriptive wealth of 'The Shell Collector', although they are still at the level of the best realistic fiction that is being published now in America."
