3 Chol-Hwan, Kang; Rigoulot, PierreThe Aquariums of Pyongyang : Ten Years in the North Korean Gulag
Softcover, Basic Books, New York, NY, 2005 0465011047 / 9780465011049
Good+, Minor edge wear, last few pages and back cover slightly rippled from water damage. Text has a handful of check marks and one page has highlighted paragraph. The rest of text is clean and unmarked. "North Korea is among the most opaque nations on earth, its regime noted for repression and for the personality cult of its father and son leaders, the late Kim Il Sung and his successor, Kim Jong Il. Kang Chol-hwan draws from firsthand experience in explaining the repression. After the division of North and South Korea, Kang's family returned to North Korea from Japan, where his grandparents had emigrated in the 1930s and where his grandfather had amassed a fortune and his grandmother became a committed Communist. They were fired with idealism and committed to building an edenic nation. Instead, the family was removed without trial to a remote concentration camp, apparently because the grandfather was suspected of counter-revolutionary tendencies. Kang Chol-hwan was nine years old when imprisoned at the Yodok camp in 1977. Over the next ten years, he endured inhumane conditions and deprivations, including an inadequate diet (supplemented by frogs and rats), regular beatings, humiliations and hard labor. Inexplicably released in 1987, the author states that the only lesson his imprisonment had "pounded into me was about man's limitless capacity to be vicious." Kang's memoir is notable not for its literary qualities, but for the immediacy and drama of the personal testimony."

4 Chomsky, NoamA New Generation Draws the Line : Kosovo, East Timor and the Standards of the West
Softcover, Verso, London, England, 2000 1859843808 / 9781859843802
Very Good+, 0.5 x 7.5 x 5.35 Inches; 160 pages; Slight edge wear, two tiny spots on cover. Text clean and unmarked. "1999 saw two major international crises which, looked at side-by-side by Noam Chomsky, starkly illuminate the strategies of the Western powers in the new century. In this volume Chomsky convincingly argues that humanitarianism was not the moving force behind NATO's intervention in Yugoslavia, and that there, as in East Timor, strategic concerns were dominant and the fate of civilian populations incidental."

5 Crossette, BarbaraThe Great Hill Stations of Asia
Hardcover, Westview Press, Boulder, CO, 1999 0813333261 / 9780813333267
Very Good in Very Good+ dust jacket, Small red remainder mark at bottom of page ends. Inner front jacket corner is price-clipped. Text clean and unmarked. "Upon arriving in India, the first English settlers found the humid, unforgiving climate almost unbearable. Malaria, cholera, and dysentery ravaged their beleaguered ranks, making the average life span for both men and women no more than 30 years. To escape these epidemics, they found refuge in the temperate climate of the hills. Above the clouds, Europeans built numerous hill stations, not just in India, but also in Burma, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia. From the luxury of these curious establishments, they ruled their colonies with imperial aplomb. Colonialism lapsed and the foreigners were eventually expelled from these countries, yet the hill stations still remain. In early 1997, Barbara Crossette, the United Nations bureau chief for the New York Times, embarked upon an ambitious journey through Asia to visit the hill stations that still function as tourist attractions. Part travel narrative, part historical retrospective, Crossette's book eloquently depicts each region's history, politics, religion, and economics in a series of thoughtful reports."

13 Jhabvala, Ruth PrawerEast Into Upper East : Plain Tales from New York and New Delhi
Softcover, Counterpoint, Washington, D. C., 1999 1582430349 / 978-1582430348

"The subtitle of Jhabvala's collection is Plain Tales from New York and New Delhi, and plain they are--if by that you mean stories that are straightforward in the telling. This is not to say, however, that they are not subtle. Jhabvala's characters are multifaceted and the situations in which they find themselves complex. In East into Upper East she proves once again that a complicated story can be plainly told, yet resonate all the more powerfully for its simple elegance and economy."

Very Good, 0.5 x 8.9 x 5.9 Inches; 192 pages; Slight edge wear, page ends are slightly age-darkened. "It is not an exaggeration to call the rise in the incidence of cancer an epidemic, and modern diet and lifestyle seem like two of the more obvious possible culprits. Author Michio Kushi, founder of Macrobiotics in America, reviews what 25 years of scientific research into the links between diet and cancer has taught us, and then proposes some fairly simple, if stringent, dietary goals. Michio suggests general guidelines, rather than specific diets, allowing the reader to understand the principles of macrobiotics, and create a personalized nutritional program."
